Morning Walk

Last month, while on my morning walk, I over heard a conversation between two young women.  They looked to be in their early 20's, one had blond hair and the other dark brown.  I could hear them coming long before I ever saw them.  They didn't notice me because they were deeply engrossed in their conversation. As they rounded the corner they stopped and squatted to carefully examine this....
BLOND:  "I really just don't GET ant hills"
BRUNETTE: "Me either, I mean, what are they for?"
BLOND: "Yea why do they build them!  I just don't understand it, and like, how do they build them?"
BRUNETTE: "Oh I know how they build them.  They find some dirt and then carry those little tiny pieces back and forth and then they stack em up into these hills."
BLOND: "Yea but why?  I still don't understand why they do it."
BRUNETTE: "I know ha? And if you knock it down they just stack em back up again!"

My first thought was, "They are yanking my chain!"  Surely they can't be that dumb? Haven't they ever seen an ant farm? Gone to school and learned about ants? Wondered why the ants climbed in and out of the hole in the middle of the hill? As they studdied them, and their faces gradually got closer to the mounds, I realized they were serious!  They were as mystified by those ant hills as if they were a pair of scientists looking at a set of perfectly formed crop cirlces!  The "mom" in me wanted to walk over and teach them all about ant hills, but I was biting the insides of my cheeks to keep from laughing.  So I increased my speed, looked straight ahead, and kept on going. I replayed their conversation over and over in my head!  By the time I finished my walk I decided that this was going on the BLOG!  The following morning I made sure to stop and take a picture of the mysterious mounds of dirt!

LOL but sad isn't it that the kids have learned so little about the wonders of nature . . . or that their parents had no time to learn about it together.

How was your walk. Still doing it every day? I am thinking about trying the am walks again and see if my feet will take the pounding. . . or maybe I will not pound them and go for time rather than distance.

Love it!! Makes you wonder what they are teaching in school these days or if anyone is paying attention! :-)

That is SO hilariously sad. I probably would have busted up before I got out of their ear shot. Kinda sad that that's going to be included in raising the next generation isn't it? How do they expect to help with homework, seize upon random teaching moments, and nurture and mold a productive member of society. Kids favorite word is "why"...how their eyes light up when you can actually answer it.

I did enjoy the great laugh. :)

WOW if that was all we had to ponder and worry about, life would be Great, wouldn't it! LOL As a teacher, I'm sure they were taught about ants, they were probably just thinking about more important things at the time- like "ooh, look at the cute boy sitting over there!", or "man, I wish had some money to buy me some new clothes!" They probably missed the whole lesson on ants! LOL
