Seriously So Blessed

I think my new little grandaughter is so beautiful!  She has brought so much happiness and healing to our family.
Crystal has asked me to share the following with family and friends.  Little Ellie was born with six fingers on her left hand.  All will be well, of that we are confident, but they just wanted to put "it" out there because it will be 2-3 months before the plastic surgeon can operate and by then most of you will see it anyway.
They took Ellie to the Pediatrician this morning and one woman in the waiting room actually "gasped" out loud when she saw her hand.  So after some discussion it was decided to just put it out there so people can be prepared and informed.  Since Ellie's birth we have learned that this is very common and in fact her surgeon said he operates on an average of 5 babies a month with the same condition.
Another reason we decided to share is because we hope that if this should happen to you or somebody you know that by following "Ellie's Journey" you will know that all will be well and perhaps Ellie's story will help bring you comfort and peace.  It's funny how losing a child strengthens you so much that when something like this happens all you can say or think is, we are "seriously so blessed"! You can't grow a new finger so an extra one is okay.  Her heart is beating and everything else is healthy what more can you ask for? We know it can be so much worse.

Here is Spencer with Ellie at the Plastic Surgeons today.
Giving Ellie a little kiss
Ellie's extra pinky finger- it really is tiny and quite cute
The surgery will be simple and quick. They will put a mask on her and knock her out just long enough to give her shots in her hand and fingers to numb her up.  Then they will take the mask off.  She will only be under a matter of minutes.  When she is all numb they will remove the finger.  The entire procedure will take 15 minutes tops.  Some people have asked us why we don't leave it alone.  There is no bone attaching the finger to the hand it is held on by a thick core of skin.  Because of this it moves around with no control and is at risk of being ripped off.  There is a blood source to the finger and if it were to be accidently torn off she would be at risk of heavy bleeding and infection.  So because of this the decision has been made to remove it.  Plus there is cosmetic reasons too we don't want Ellie growing up and dealing with "gasps" like Crystal had to deal with today...this world is hard enough.
We are very grateful that this is a simple fix and we are certain she will be fine.
Our family is so blessed by the sweet spirit that is "Ellie Mae".  Thank you all for your continued prayers and support.

Crystal thank you for sharing Ellies story with us all. She is so darling, I can't get over how tiny she is.
I'm so happy for your family, I havent seen your boys this happy in a long time. Thank you for having faith in Heavenly Father Ellie is supposed to be here. Her very little spirit has made my sister happy for the first time in a year and a half and for that I will always be greatful. I haven't seen your smile leave your face once since you have had her. Congradulations she is a doll.

Thank you Sage for taking such good care of Ellie while she was with you.

She is beautiful and I love her name.

My grandma was born with 6 toes on each foot 80+ years ago. Back then they simply tied a string to the toes until all blood loss was stopped and the toes fell off.

It's a shame people can't accept little things that aren't the norm.

To anonymous: They said it wasn't that long ago that they did that and some Dr's still will if the core isn't too big. But they have found that it leaveas a "nub" on the side of the foot/hand. Should she end up left handed this nub could cause her problems when writing. I hadn't thought of that. The new method leaves a clean edge and she will barely notice a scar-if any. Bless your grandma's grandparents! We have tried to picture them tying her finger off then finding it in her blanket or something...kind of tramatic if you think about it. But your right they did and in some cases still do tie them off.

What a precious little girl! I am so happy your family finally has some good news! No more weeds! I think someone should have smacked that woman at the dr. office! I don't care if they have 12 toes or fingers on each hand, a baby is a precious gift from a loving Heavenly Father. Outward appearances don't matter. But I realize we do what we need to to make things easier on our children. Our little grand with Turner Syndrome tokes a shot every night before bed so she will MAYBE reach 4'8" tall by the time she is an adult. It's the spirit that counts. She is beautiful and so is little Ellie and I love her name! Congrats again, Grandma!

I have a nephew who was born yesterday with 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot. His older sister also had 6 toes on each foot and underwent surgery to correct it. I am not sure what the plan is with the new baby but i am pretty sure something will be done. I will be praying for your sweet little grandaughter. thanks for sharring her story.

Liz, I wanted to comment about the "extra diget".
My Jessica's oldest had an extra finger on his left hand they didn't remove it till he was a year old.
Jessica got him the book from Dr. Suess" One Fish, Two fish... it talks about eleven fingers. They put his hand print in it w/ a picture.
Ellie is perfect in every way just as all "our" grandchildren are.
Being a grammy is so AWESOME!
Your friend always, Terri Bushman:)
